Daily Math: Differentiation

Here are some of the ways that our class will differentiate

lessons to include and be mindful of the journey each student is

on. There will be options for students to choose how they plan to complete their work. I want every student to first answer the way that I have asked to ensure that students are preforming at their intended level. Then once they are done, they are allowed to pick any of the options below and complete the warm-up in any way they would prefer. This gives students voice and autonomy over how they are showing understanding and mastery of the warm-up/lesson. Here are the ways in which I plan to differentiate most warm-ups for the students:

  • Number of the day:

  • When students walk in each day, they will be given a color. Based on this color, their number of the day will be given to them on their level. This will allow me to work with all studnets while providing a fun activity for students to do as they get ready to think about math.

  • Writing in Math/ Think-Pair-Share using Questions on Task Cards:

  • The questions will be written out and students are to reply to a question in writing or verbally to a fellow classmate. This helps all students practice their writing skills and math vocabulary. I enjoy watching them choose how they plan to answer the question, this helps me to see who is more comfortable with writing it down and who likes to vocally show understanding.

  • Problem of the day:

  • Having students answer the questions using picture equations. I prefer having students work with partners for this to encourage "math talk". With picture equations, I am able to differentiate based on difficulty to ensure that each student is working at a problem that is at a comfortable level. We will go over all of them at the end to promote review, encourage and answer any questions.

  • Jokes/ Riddles:

  • Making math fun and exciting is what I am all about!

Having creative ways to get students involved in solving math problems and using jokes or riddles is one way that I enjoy doing this! Here is a link of some of the jokes I will be using!
